The largest anime convention on the East Coast is bringing Japanese cool to August in the city. In past iterations, Anime NYC has brought in 150,000 fans from around the world, highlighting Japanese pop culture with anime screenings, stacks of manga, appearances by popular Japanese creators, cosplay showcases, and a gaming hall.
Celebrity anime guests include Eiko Kadono (Kiki’s Delivery Service), Junko Takeuchi (Naruto, Hunter x Hunter,) and Tsuyoshi Takaki (Black Torch). If you’re older than 5, you’ll need a badge — and Saturday just sold out. You’ll also need to be in the mood to enjoy the energy of a full house; this is not an event for the crowd-cautious among us. Take heart, there will be fortification available from myriad vendors, including Banh Mi Shack and Lisa’s Dumplings, and you can finish off with a soothing option from Tea and Milk. ❖
